Most of us are familiar with bacterial odours from mould to the smell of stale milk, body odours and so on but most of us are not so familiar with chemical odours. Here is a list of common chemicals that may be useful for you to identify by odour.
Chemical – Description of odour
Acetone - A pungent smell.
Acetic acid – A smell like vinegar.
Acetaldehyde – A penetrating and pungent type of suffocating odour.
3-methyl-1H-indole - A putrid type of fecal smell.
Acetonitrile – A sweet ethereal smell.
Acetophenone – Sweet pungent odour of jasmine or orange blossom.
Acrolein – A burnt sweet small.
